Residential Electric Water Heaters Maintenance

I mean that’s how the water heater  operates but when we were talking about  installation because that’s what we were  first talking about one thing that we  get and we you know we have a call  center here we take a lot of calls and  we know what’s going on in the field  with with people out in the field  installing these either either di wires  or contractors installing these one  thing that we see a lot is on a cold  tank is what a dry fired heating element  yeah you get a dry fire element and  actually when I teach trained.

When I  trained classes to work in the call  center I show this to them will install  a water heater will start filling the  water heater up and when you’re around  the water here what’s filling you can  actually hear water rushing into it well  and I always trick the class because I  hear and I’m like tell me when it’s full  because you hear the water coming in  right and you hear the water stopping  they’re like it’s full and I go up to it  and I show them that of course it’s not  full because what happens is that water  is entering unless you have several hot  water faucets open right you trap air in  here and so that once the air pressure  rises it stops water from flowing in and  typically stops right about here  up under the lower of the upper heating  L right and then you have a large pocket  full of air  okay and so you’re gonna dry fire the  heating element if you apply power to it  yes  and I think.

We’d have an example of a  dry fired heating element right here yes  that’s an example of a draw fired  heating element now if you look at these  you can you can definitely see a  difference I have a new heating element  and have the dry fired one the new  heating element has a nice zinc coating  on it shiny like a nickel or a dime very  similar then you see the dry fired  heating element which is burnt up it’s  copper in color because it’s burnt off  the zinc plating being draw fired and  you just see the metal that’s the metal  it’s made from its copper okay and so  what there’s an example right there what  we’re talking about on the screen that’s  an actual dry fire of a heating element  so that’s what happens when the what the  elements not submerged in water so what  we have to do is this you’re going to  need to start filling the tank up you’re  going to open up your hot water faucets  all of them in the home and let them run  free so there’s not spitting and  sputtering get all the air out of the  tank until they run free just steady  streams for around three minutes then we  can go ahead and and apply the power now  you tell me you’d do something totally  didn’t hook it up until it’s filled up  yeah I don’t even look electricity to  the water heater until I have it  completely full so when I install an  electric water heater.

I install it I  pipe it I fill it full of water I make  sure that I purge the air out of several  faucets and now what’s air kind of stops  spurting out I go the extra mile and  allow water to flow out of the faucets  usually for about three more minutes and  then once I close everything up I come  back to the heater I check for leaks  okay if I have any leaks in my piping  I’ll fix it but then that’s one actually  make the electrical connection to it  turn it on that way I’ll make sure I  don’t make any mistakes I’ve draw fired  elements before yeah just long time ago  and I didn’t know any better yeah and  I’m sure people do that all the time it  happens all the time it’s not a big deal  the good thing is in elements a cheap  part right do it  and it’s don’t cost a lot of money to  fix it all right so you want it to run  free and free without spitting a  sputtering for three minutes all the  water faucets in the house and once it  runs free steady stream then you can go  ahead and apply power and and start  heating water  all right so kind of moves us to our  next segment so that’s a little bit  about dry fire at how this water heater  works we’re gonna talk about.

You know  some troubleshooting and some some  common calls service calls that you  might experience and really it’s two of  them you’ve got two most common calls  that you’re going to experience one of  them is insufficient hot water and the  other is no hot water and really the  insufficient hot water you’re gonna have  to do some some questioning to the  customer about a couple of these  especially both of these really because  we have to really know insufficient hot  water to a customer their expectation  may be different than yours and a hot  water to me may be really hot and you  may not think it’s that hot at all so we  got to find out what what they mean by  insufficient hot water you know you  usually want to make sure that our what  we think matches their definition and  when a customer says insufficient hot  water it could mean a couple of  different things one it could mean that  the temperature is just not hot enough  right and then two it could mean that  the amount it’s not hot enough they’re  not getting the volume of water or hot  water that they expect a gal velour  heater especially.

If it’s a new  installation right yeah customers  expectation on a new water heater they  think that whatever thing if it’s brand  new it’s gonna give them more than what  they had before that’s what they’re  gonna think no matter what you could  have a 50 gallon tank in here and you  put in a 40 gallon tank just because  it’s new they’re thinking they’re gonna  get more hot water out of it because  they don’t know really how the water  heater works they don’t know what the  temperature setting was they could have  been an older water heater been in there  for a long time they could have had the  temperature set up higher those are  things that we need to find out whenever  we take a call like that yeah typically  with the lifespan of a water heater  until recently most your automatic  washing machines and dishwashers  required you to have the water  set to 140 degrees for the dishes to  come clean right so that was a long time  ago when the customer may have adjusted  that temperature they don’t remember  they don’t remember what they said it to  the water heaters come factory preset at  120 and that’s usually what they’ll  leave it when that installer installs it  they don’t usually take off these panels  right they install it and it’s good to  go and so that could cause the issue or  the customer you know says they have  insufficient how long exactly so now  we’ve got a call we’ve we’ve determined  that it is it is a water heater issue so  what we’re going to have to do is we’re  gonna have to go check the water heater out.

How To – Change a pressure relief device

Welcome to shower spares TV so today  we’re going to talk about electric  showers and why they may leak internally  but before we do any of that we  obviously need to make sure that the  electricity is isolated you should have  in your bathroom a pool called switch to  isolate the shower,

But this does not make it safe you still need to go to your fuse board and turn off the fuse it  should be a separate fuse before you  attempt to even take off the cover this  show so now you’ve isolated the  electricity and everything you’ve made sure everything is safe to work on remove the cover of the shower and the most common cause of the shower leaking  internally is what we call a pressure relief device this on this particular  shower it’s situated on the outlet pipe down here and secured with two screws  water would come out of this section  here and it blows a little rubber ball  right because the pressure is built up  in the tank couldn’t get out of  the handset quick enough and it’s  released the pressure through there so we’re going to replace.

the PRD I’ve also  isolated the mains water to this shower  just to be on the safe side so like I  said it’s held in by two Phillips screws  so remove the PRD these are available  from sharpers comm on the link below and  then now we need to get the new PID and  replace it this is the new PR D it comes  with an o-ring place the o-ring inside  the outlet pipe fit the PRD just a  little bit of force required to push it  in and then attach it with the two  screws so that’s the PRD replaced in  this shower now but don’t forget there’s  a reason why that PRD is activated in  the first place which takes me back to  one of the main reasons is a block to  shower handset or a kinked hose if your  shower handset block don’t forget you  can get a disc Aylor  to soak the handset in  we sell out on shoppers calm.

DIY Hot shower – Immersion heater

Hi today I’m going to show you my DIY  hot water shower it uses a 2.5 gallon  water container with some flexible holes  for the actual showerhead and inside is  a 400 percent conversion heats up now  this is just going to be a quick  overview video and if people like you I  can do a follow up video witness details  here you can see the wiring for the  immersion heater I have a circuit  breaker here which turns the heat on and  off comes along here over here up here  then into the shower  here’s a quick demo of the water heater  yeah actually gets water so hot so  quickly that it starts to steam up the  camera lens so the first step is to turn  on the faucet which will fill this up  into where overflows  once water flows you know they talk to  the top I also have this stick in which  is mine into certain points in this we  know how much water is left inside here  obviously my teaching moment this is  good.

So my immersion beaten so what I have to  do now is turn that on for four minutes  this is a 2.5 gallon poutine it takes  three or four minutes to get to a really  hot night shell  one thing I did add is this little and  stirring stick just made of plastic  because as the Rooter gets hotter the  hot water rises to the top one whole  bunch of stuff in the bottom so I just  highly dislike a mix you have different  programs with my hand in there after the  four minutes has passed and I turn off  the breaker switch I’m ready to show and  you just start and stop it by removing  this  that’s nice Hawkinson Jules stop it  this one like this you just have shown  us so you shampoo them from the pen and  ink to new again  DS incubator you can tell how long we’ve  got left based on this water pipe  regionals Mattamy lowers as you ER MDR  water so I hope you enjoyed video please  remember to give a thumbs up and  subscribe.
